Second Lady, Samira Bawumia surprises La General Hospital

The Second Lady of the Republic, Hajia Mrs Samira Bawumia, has paid a surprise visit to new and expectant mothers at the La General Hospital, in the La Dadekotopon Municipality, in the Greater Accra Region.

Mrs Bawumia, a champion of maternal health, who was in the company of the members of Parliament for La- Dadekotopon and Ledzorkuku-Krowor Constituencies, Hon. Vincent Sowah-Odotei and Hon. Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, decided to use this visit to acquaint herself on the state of antenatal facilities and the challenges expectant mothers face during antenatal visits.

Speaking to Dr. James Quartey, the head of the Obstetric unit, Mrs. Bawumia thanked the hospital personnel for their dedication and professional discharge of duty towards new and would-be mothers who patronize the facility. She was taken round the facility, where she interacted with women who were being seen by the obstetrician and gave out bags containing prenatal vitamins, blood supplements, baby care products and beverages.

On his part, the medical superintendent, Dr. Ebenezer Oduro-Mensah, after a closed-door management meeting with the Second Lady, commended her for visiting the facility to seek firsthand information. This, he said would help highlight their issues and expedite action from the relevant authorities.

The Second Lady assured them of her support, through her not-for-profit organisation, Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP).

Mrs Bawumia, is a known maternal health advocate, who through (SEHP), has initiated a number of timely and critical interventions such as the Safe Delivery Project, where birth kits are distributed to expectant mothers in their third trimester, in deprived communities across Ghana. As part of the project, several traditional birth attendants and health workers are being trained. The Second Lady has also retooled a number of health facilities, in Ghana.
