Police in Nkwanta, in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Volta region have intercepted three payloads of live ammunition smuggled aboard a Metro Mass Transit bus allegedly en-route to the Northern region.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr. William Ayensu of the Nkwanta South Divisional Police Commander, each package contained a total of 700 bullets.

He said they were believed to be on their way to Chereponi and Saboba in the Northern Region where communal violence had erupted between the Konkomba and the Chokosi, leaving many displaced.

The ammunition, which included an SMG rifle and magazines, were sheathed in a carton and hidden in the bus with registration number GR 4417-12.

The police however uncovered the “parcel” at a barrier in the Nkwanta Municipality at about 1800 hours on Sunday.
