Violence: Somanya NHIS office locked up and manager assaulted by suspected NPP youth

Irate men believed to be supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region on Thursday locked up the office of the manager of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) at Somanya.

The men besieged the office in protest of the manager’s appointment.

This happens to be the latest of similar incidents that have characterized the first two years of the NPP government.

The leaders of the group numbering six, forcibly pulled out the manager from the office and braced the entrance with padlocks disrupting the workday.

The irate supporters are upset the new manager, one Emmanuel Martey, is not a native of Somanya.

Assistant MIS Officer at the NHIS office, Eric Narh told Citi News workers did not feel safe.

He narrated the course of events ahead of the action of the purported NPP supporters.

“A new manager who was posted to our office assumed work yesterday and had an introductory meeting with the staff so after the meeting, he told us he was going to see the Municipal Chief Executive Officer to greet him. So he was accompanied by John Akorfaba the accounts officer.”

“Ten minutes after they left we realized that some people barged into the office and started nailing padlocks to look up the place so one of the workers quickly took a picture of the incident an sent it to the officer who was with the manager. But some minutes later I don’t know what happened, the guys were called back to open the office so we thought it has ended only to see them again today around 2 pm in the afternoon.”

“I was working producing cards for our clients when a colleague of mine came to inform me the rebels who came yesterday to lock the manager’s office are back. They pulled the manager out of his office and locked it using two padlocks. What they kept saying was they will not sit down for somebody from Upper Manya Krobo to come and head Yilo and so they want someone they know to be appointed as the district manager for the scheme.”

“When the issue happened the manager quickly reported the issue at the Somanya police station, so they called the regional director who also called the Manya manager to come to the scene to report the situation on the ground and after that a closed-door meeting was held between the PRO and the scheme manager of Manya, but I do not know the outcome of the meeting.”

Eric Narh also revealed that staff have decided to stay away from work because of the tension.

“The guys threatened to lock the office of the accountant who was pleading with them as at the time they were locking the manager’s office so this situation has made all of us to be afraid. Our lives are in danger now and the new manager also advised us not to return to work until further notice to be on the safer side because as we speak it is very dangerous.”
