Ghana seeks USD100m for rural telephony project

The government of Ghana is seeking international funding of USD100 million to facilitate comprehensive voice and data connectivity in rural areas, writes Xinhua.

Minister of Communications Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said that discussions are taking place with the finance minister and the rural telephony project is set to begin in mid-2019: ‘We would like to kick-start the project by the middle of next year, as soon as we secure financing and then we expect to complete it by the end of 2020.’

Ghana has collaborated with Chinese vendor Huawei in deploying rural telephony sites, including the implementation of Rural Star technology, with 400 cell sites installed during 2018.
