Ghana confirms withdrawal of Kosovo recognition

Ghana’s deputy foreign minister, Charles Owiredu, told AFP on Tuesday that his country has decided to withdraw recognition of Kosovo as an independent state.

The reasons were communicated to Serbia in a letter, he said. “The decision to recognise Kosovo turned out to be premature”, the letter said of its recognition in 2012.

The confirmation came a day after Serbia’s foreign minister, Ivica Dacic, told media in Belgrade that this African country has decided to reverse recognition of Kosovo becoming, as Djacic claimed, 16th country to de-recognise Kosovo.

Kosovo’s ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied Serbia’s claims and in a statement on Tuesday they insisted that Ghana has not withdrawn its recognition, insisting that this country still has a non-residential Ambassador covering Kosovo.

116 countries of the world have recognised Kosovo since its declaration of independence on 17 February 2008. Serbia said it hopes to bring the tally to below half of the UN’s 193 members.
