Tunisian President Béji Kayed Sibsi passes away

The Tunisian presidency announced on Thursday (25 July) the death of President Béji Kayed Sibsi, inside the military hospital in Tunis.

Béji Caid al-Sibsi returned to intensive care at the hospital on Thursday after he was hospitalized for several days at the end of June after suffering a “health condition”.

His son Hafez Qaid al-Sibsi told AFP that the 93-year-old Tunisian president “is in intensive care in the military hospital (in the capital) and things are not going well.”

His son added that his father was transferred to the military hospital due to an emergency health problem, caused by food poisoning that he was exposed to during the last period.

It is worth mentioning that Al-Sibsi was in a critical condition last month and transferred to the military hospital, where he spent a week before leaving after announcing his recovery, and appeared on two occasions only.

The 93 years old Sibsi has been a prominent figure in Tunisia since the ouster of former president , Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, and is the second-oldest head of state in the world after Queen Elizabeth II.
