Public Alert: Ghana bans Codeine syrups, restricts Tramadol access

Ghana’s Ministry of Health has banned the manufacture, distribution and sale of cough syrups containing codeine and has restricted access to Tramadol.

The directives by the Minister of Health was in the exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 116 of the Public Health Act, 2012 )Act 851).

A public notice by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) noted that all approved dosage forms and strengths of codeine drugs registered by the FDA shall be reclassified as “Controlled Drugs” and “Prescription Only Medicines” and subsequently dispensed only upon proof of a valid prescription.
