Professor Avea Nsow criticizes UEW authorities over suspension

The suspended Principal of the University of Education’s College of Languages, Professor Avea Nsow has registered his displeasure with the institution over his suspension.

He told Citi News, two months after school authorities asked him to step aside, no charges had been proffered against him.

Professor Nsow was suspended following the dismissal of some four officials of the institution including then Vice-Chancellor Professor Mawutor Avoke, in an ongoing investigation over a contract awarded by the University.

According to him, the university’s posture is undemocratic and an embarrassment to academics.

“I was there when a letter came, a very vague accusation in just two or three sentences asking me to step aside. It was only when the committee was set that they said there were a few things they will want to ask me. Something short and simple.

“I asked them to let me know what I have done so I can deal with them properly …It is not fair; we are in a democratic institution. What nonsense is this? Are we in some Banana republic?”

UEW Vice Chancellor, four others dismissed

The governing council of the University of Education, Winneba, has dismissed five principal officers of the institution, following an emergency meeting on Monday.

One other official has had her appointment terminated.

The five are the Vice-Chancellor who was serving a suspension, Professor Mawutor Avoke, Finance Officer, Dr. Theophilus Senyo Ackorlie, Daniel Tetteh, Mary Dzimey and Frank Owusu Boateng.

They were interdicted in July 2017 by the UEW governing council after it emerged that some vital documents at some offices at the center of an ongoing investigation had gone missing.

Prof. Nsoh, however, described the dismissal as unfortunate.

“It is very disturbing indeed. It’s very unfortunate and a tragic loss. I’m hoping that they can fight it back to get what they have been due for over 20 years”.

“I know the Vice-Chancellor is a well-composed person who started from the unit level through all the ranks up to the role of Pro-Vice-Chancellor and then the Vice-Chancellor. I know the Finance Officer; he is very prolific. He has a lot of networks. I’ve worked with all of those affected,” he added.

Standoff at UEW

A Winneba High Court in 2017 ordered Professor Mawutor Avoke, to step aside until a case brought against him and the University’s Governing Council is determined.

The order was made in a case brought before the court by one Supi Kofi Kwayera, who insisted that the Vice Chancellor and the Finance Officer, were operating under the institution’s defunct governing council.

However, before the substantive claims were investigated, the University applied to the court to dismiss the suit but the court dismissed the application.

The High Court subsequently found Professor Avoke, and the school’s Finance Officer, Dr. Theopholus Senyo Ackorlie, guilty of procurement and other financial irregularities.

The court subsequently ordered the retrieval of all monies paid to the contractors of the North Campus Roads and a forensic audit of the project.
