Just In: ROPA could be implemented more than 61 days to elections – EC asserts

Dr Serebour Quaicoe

The Director of Electoral Services of the Electoral Commision, Dr Serebour Quaicoe, has said, the EC could implement ROPA law in 2020. He made the revelation this morning during an interview with an Accra based programme Joy FM’s Newsfile, monitored by Ghanamatter.com.

In his explanation, Dr Serebour Quaicoe said the law permits the electoral commission to register citizens abroad 61 days before the national elections takes place. When asked whether the EC could do that, he said the timing was crucial giving the ongoing voter registration exercises and the COVID-19 pandemic.

He couldn’t confirm if the EC was planning to registering voters abroad.

He observed that the current ban on foreign travels and lockdown protocols makes it difficult for the EC to emback on registering Ghanaians abroad. He was quick to add that, should the air travel ban are lifted more than 61 days before the elections on December 7th, the EC could implement the ROPAL.
