Some residents of Kukurantumi in the Abuakwa North municipality of the Eastern Region on Friday, 28 June 2019 demonstrated against their chief Daasebre Nana Darko Boamah III for indiscriminately selling off their lands.

The residents alleged that the chief has sold off about 6000 acres of land to private individuals.

The red-attired residents carried placards with inscriptions such as: “We are citizens, not spectators”, and “Give us our lands”, among others.

A demonstrator told journalists that: “Our current chief does not respect his citizens. Our ancestors toiled for this land for us, he can’t use his prowess to take the land from us without compensation”.

Another demonstrator said: “All that we’re saying is that the land the chief has sold is too much for us. We’re thinking of the future.”

The demonstrators hinted at petitioning the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs president over by Okyehene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II to dethrone Daasebre Nana Darko Boamah III.

One angry demonstrator threatened: “If nothing happens after this demonstration, we will petition the regional house of chiefs and Osagyefo Amoatea Ofori Panin in Kyebi that we can no longer live with our chief, he should destool him so we can enstool someone else.”
