Atuguba exposes attempts to bribe supreme court judges

Retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice William Atuguba, has recounted attempts made by some individuals to offer money to Supreme Court judges in order to obtain favourable judgments in legal cases.

“Apart from political challenges in the cases I sat on, there were other challenges: you can’t believe that some people will even dare try to induce even Supreme Court judges with money to decide cases in their favour,” Justice Atuguba said at a lecture series organised by the Catholic Church in Accra.

This is not the first time that bribery allegations have been made publicly in connection with the judiciary.

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas released an undercover piece in 2015 which captured high profile judges accepting bribes and other gifts in order to warp justice.

Even though Supreme Court judges were not captured in the exposé, 34 high court judges and magistrates were implicated in the documentary.

Twelve of them were superior judges while 22 were lower court judges.

They were dismissed but a few of them are still battling the state over their removal from office.
